The Eldorado name was first used by Cadillac on a limited-edition convertible in 1953 and marked a new direction in styling for Cadillac. In 1956 the Eldorado convertible continued as the Biarritz, while the 2-door hardtop Seville was added. The 1957 Eldorado Brougham featured many new technological advances that are standard on today's luxury cars, such as quad headlights, a power seat with memory, automatic door locks, air suspension, and a foot-operated parking brake that released automatically when the transmission was shifted into gear. Tail fins were an important element of Eldorado design throughout the late 1950s but lost their prominence during the early 1960s. The Eldorado was completely redesigned in 1967 and was the first Cadillac to utilize a front-wheel-drive platform. The final year of regular Eldorado convertible production was 1976, although Cadillac produced 2000 Eldorado Biarritz convertibles in 1984. The Eldorado was dramatically redesigned in 1992 with very sharp, angular body lines, and the Eldorado Touring Coupe was introduced. Cadillac continues to use the Eldorado to showcase new technology, such as the massaging lumbar seat, first offered on the 1999 ETC.
